FAQs

  • The basic principle behind IPL is that it employs light energy at specific wavelengths, fluency, pulse duration and intervals. This light energy is absorbed by target cells (water, melanin, haemoglobin) and converted to heat to cause thermal damage: destroying pigment, discolouration and hair follicle activity, as well as boosting cellular rejuvenation.

  • IPL is a well established treatment for:

    • Hair removal

    • Thread veins

    • Rosacea

    • Pigmentation

    • Sun spots

    • Skin rejuvenation

  • We are proud to be partnered with the UK’s No.1 IPL manufacturer & leading NHS supplier, Lynton Lasers. Made in Britain, Lynton EXCELIGHT® IPL is widely regarded by many Dermatologists as the most clinically effective IPL in the marketplace.

  • Yes, the type of light used is different, with IPL producing a versatile broad spectrum of wavelengths that can be filtered, versus laser light that is monochromatic and targets very specific lesions.

  • A test patch is carried out in a small trial area to determine the treatment parameters and to judge how your skin might react to a full treatment. This allows us to assess how well the light energy is being absorbed and whether your skin is responding as expected.

We ask you to note any redness/swelling and whether or not your skin blisters/feels excessively hot and for how long following the test patch.

  • Yes! It is important you:

    • Don’t get a suntan / use a sunbed / fake tan in the preceding 4-6 weeks

    • Don’t have a recent wax / facial peel / resurfacing treatment

    • Be aware some medication may make you more sensitive to light

    • Inform us if you suffer with keloid scarring / any other skin condition or skin cancer

    • Be aware that some darker skin types may be unsuitable for this treatment

    • Avoid waxing, plucking, hair removal creams and bleaching for one month prior to hair removal treatments. Hair should be shaved prior to treatment and be no longer than 1mm in length.

  • After a full consultation and skin assessment, we will apply gel to your cleaned skin, and fit you with protective eye goggles. The handheld device is then held against your skin and treatment performed in bursts as we move across the target area.

  • Everyone has different pain thresholds, but IPL treatment is only mildly uncomfortable, it feels like an elastic band being snapped briefly against your skin.

  • Depending on the treatment indication, you may need a course of 3-6 sessions every 3-6 weeks to achieve desired results. Sessions will usually last about 30 minutes.

  • No, IPL is a non-ablative treatment, which means the energy is targeted towards the lower layers of the skin (dermis) without damaging the top layers (epidermis). You may find your skin is slightly red for a few hours (rarely days) after treatment, and pigment may initially get darker before it resolves, but there is no significant downtime.
